The Summer Report 7-26-10
It sure is hot! We have had some days where the heat index is over 100, and that can make for a great farmers tan. The fishing however, though not as easy as spring time conditions has still been good. We have been catching good numbers from the upper reaches of Lake Marion up into the river. 20+ fish a day have been caught and that should hold right on into fall. Some bigger fish from 4 - 7 lbs are mixed in but most are sizably smaller.
Baits of choice have been
Fish Stalker's 4' Craw Worm rigged
Bungi style (
click to a see video)-- Green Pumpkin Texas Red, June Bug, and Plain ole Green Pumpkin have been the consistent colors.
We are also still catching some fish on the trees with wacky rigged
Fish Stalker Trick Sticks and Finesse worms in the same colors.
For that early morning (and I mean early!) bite,, we have stuck a few big fish with the
SPRO KING DADDY Frog. This is a big bait and getting 1 bite a morning is good,, but hold on if you hook one up! The largest so far is 9.25lb- an absolutely massive fish for summer.
August bookings dates are wide open with September and October getting more attention so if you're ready for some time on the water give me call and get your date set!
SPECIAL-- Book multiple days in August and ask for a "Summer Fun" rate! IT'S BEEN A GOOD SPRING!
Both Santee-Cooper and Lake Murray have been producing good catches this season.
SANTEE- COOPER
Though we had a few times where the weather didn't cooperate and trips postponed, all and all the fishing has been good. Soft plastics have been doing well for the most part and spinnerbaits and buzzbaits have been fun when the conditions permited. Numerous fish over 8lbs have come to the net, and I have had a few clients with there personal best-- both there largest fish ever and 5 fish agregate weight.
Andy Rutledge with our best 5 from a 20+ fish day.
No giants, but the 5 fish total was over 30lb! Can you tell by the grin!
LAKE MURRAY
Lot of fish! This is the fun time of year for Lake Murray! The fish have gotten started and run and gun is the name of the game. Recent trips produced over 20 fish a day, most in the 2-3lb range with a few over 5lbs. I really enjoy this lake in April, May and June-- the fishing is really fun with less need for technical expertise to catch fish.
Think you might want in on the action? Drop me a line and
book a trip! We fish out of a brand new 21ft Legend with all the bells and whistles!
W REELS THAT TRUELY MEET THE NEED

I'm happy to anounce my affiliation with
US REEL, makers of the Supercaster series.
US REEL has taken inovation to a new level with there unique design. Instead of starting with a ready-made reel, the
US REEL engineering team built the Supercaster from the the ground up. Being fisherman themselves, they knew what they wanted and pulled out every stop to make it happen. Drop by there website and check them out,, or better yet lets go fishing and I'll put one in your hand!
IT WAS A COOL ONE!
After almost a month of postponing, I finally had the opportunity to get on the water with Alex Dziengielewski. Murray was our destination. Alex is a custom rod builder, making this trip a joint venture to some extent- I am always interested in high performance equipment and Alex wanted to learn a little about the lake. Alex brought along a half dozen of his custom creations. When you first put one of these rods in your hand the difference is obvious. A stick that is almost 7ft weighing in at around 4 oz leaves you with no doubt this is a performance piece of equipment. The rods lend themselves to comparison with high end golf clubs- Its a difference that anyone can feel and true hard core fisherman can really appreciate.
During our trip I got to put a few of the rods through their paces. Most notable was the lack of fatigue. The weight difference coupled with the custom balance made even more of a difference as the day progressed. The weather was cold, the fishing was loot warm, but the
ALX Rods made it a hot trip.

The surface temp at Lake Murray has dipped to the low 50's and the water has dropped almost 1.5 ft running most of the fish to deeper water. The bait we were expecting to see were no where to be found but there were still a few quality bass to be caught. Alex managed to catch the biggest fish of the day- a nice one close to 4lbs. The next full moon should bring the bait in, and the fishing will pick up. This time of year can be great and the pressure is non existent. We didn't see a single boat all day.
THE COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE-
Every year I try to formulate a schedule of events. Events to fish, events to work, events to just attend. The possibilities are really mind boggling.
BAS
S-
I will be fishing the
BASS Southern Opens again in 2010. The first event in January will be on Florida's
Lake Okeechobee. Although great finishes have alluded me there, I like Okeechobee. It fits my style. Lot of shallow grass, shallow techniques dominate and if you catch it right it can really produce.
The second event in May will be Alabama's
Smith Lake. This one is a new venture for me. I have been told "deep and clear" with lots of Spotted Bass. I look forward to the challenge, I don't think there is anything more fun to catch than a spot, they just don't give up.
Third but definitely not last, is Georgia's
Lake Seminole in October. This is a wonderful place full of stumps, standing timber, Hydrilla and every other bass attracting thing your imagination can come up with. I have history here-- never been to this weedy river lake without cashing a check. It will take big sacks to win and I can't wait.
